Adi Narayan wrote an article called “A New App Wants to Make Hotels a Hit in India.” Instead of attending university to get a degree, a young Indian man, Ritesh Agarwal, created an app called Oyo Rooms. The primary message is the app gives a customer a brief description of the hotel’s living environment, so it can help the customer choose which hotel best fits their needs.
Due to the large population in India, and its tourism sector, hotels are big business in India. Agarwal decided to create Oyo Rooms, a mobile application, to solve a major issue; the standards of quality of Indian hotels were often subpar. Oyo Rooms is an app that gives a brief description of the hotel for the consumer and tells them the positives and/or negatives of booking a room there. He got investors and the app started to become a success. Hotels started to generate profit, because people could find out about the hotels on the app, versus taking a gamble by booking a random hotel room.
An investor name Peter Thai, co-founder of PayPal, has invested in college dropouts who are looking to start new companies. Thai invested in Oyo Rooms so the app can be developed and become an everyday name in India. The customer has a choice of which room to stay in, and pick what suits them the best. The app has allowed Indians and tourists to feel more comfortable when planning to book a hotel room. India has a big market for hotels and this app was the perfect solution to ensure the standards of quality of Indian hotels. According to the article, India’s lodging market is worth $7.2 billion!
One of the interesting features of the app is that customers can negotiate the prices of hotel rooms they wish to stay in. This app makes a great recognition of not just making the hotel environment a better place, but now customers are going and asking to haggle the price a bit. This is a benefit for the consumer market, because now a lot of people that travel to India can so on a budget. It will help many families in India as well, because of the huge population of lower and middle-class families there. This also benefits hotel companies, as they can garner more consumers if they are willing to lower the price a bit.
The significance of this app is that it creates revenue for Indian hotels, while ensuring quality standards for guests. People are becoming more comfortable when booking a hotel in India, because they know exactly what the room will have. Also, this app can benefit many people from other countries that stay in India for business or tourism. This is an asset for India’s tourism industry, which is often not visited due to its third world status and negative stigma held among those living in developed countries.
Imagine how much faster you could travel if you could fly or hop to your destination, rather than drive. Self-driving, unmanned drones may be the wave of future transportation in the future. The Ehang 184 was approved for testing in Las Vegas previously, and is now available for use in Dubai for personal transportation needs. The Ehang 184 will serve as a personal mini-helicopter taxi service, that can only hold one person at a time and fly them for up to 23 minutes. This drone has four motors underneath the body, just like a remote-controlled drone toy, which has gained traction for its ability to take cool videos and travel and unsurpassed speeds and heights. Both cities are aiming to adopt this to serve the cities’ growing transportation needs. The vehicle is electric-powered which makes it extremely good for the environment, and may eventually be a solution to end our dependency on petroleum for transportation. With just a two-hour charge, the drone can fly for up to 23 minutes at sea level. At higher elevations, the drone can travel with speeds up to 63 miles per hour for 10 minutes. Of course, this is the first self-flying drone intended for human transportation use, and thus, will be improved as new innovations are introduced in the drone industry. In order to fly from one place to another, all a passenger has to do is to use the app to select where they want to travel. The drone can’t fly directly anywhere, but must travel from one Ehang landing pad to another. The drone has been, and will be tested to ensure maximum safety before any passengers can fly. The drones are controlled by and monitored by traffic control on land, to ensure maximum safety for everyone involved. In the case of an emergency or malfunction, the drone is instructed to land to the nearest pad. Also, it uses encrypted channels to protect information from hackers.
The first drones were developed for the use of military for target practice in the 1930s. They are now used by the military to pursue targets in volatile areas, with advanced GPS, video, speed, and ammunition capabilities. They are widely used by news, production, photography, sports, and entertainment companies, who are able to get better footage easily as a result of flying to a destination without relying on a human to physically move video cameras. They were recently introduced as a toy and video camera, which caused many to worry about safety problems that may arise from anyone flying an aircraft, especially in heavily populated areas. Amazon, among other businesses, have begun to use drones to deliver products to customers, especially in rural areas. Soon, our skies may be bombarded with drones used for entertainment, transportation, and business purposes.
With the implementation of chip technology in credit cards across the United States, hackers and scammers are now turning to the internet rather than brick-and-mortar stores in their expedition to steal consumers’ money. While stealing credit card information manually used to be a huge problem in the past, the implementation of chip-reading technology has greatly eliminated the risks of one’s card being duplicated while shopping in stores. However, the use of stolen credit card information rose 40% last year alone. Fraudsters are becoming increasingly technically adept allowing them to steal people’s financial data over the internet using sophisticated hacking methods.
Worldwide eCommerce sales are expected to reach $27.7 trillion in 2020. North America and Asia are the largest players in the market, which are expected to grow further with the emergence of online grocery shopping and the ability to shop on smartphones. With the worldwide eCommerce market surging, the protection of consumer data is becoming of increasing concern. eCommerce merchants and financial institutions will spend $9.2 billion a year in fraud detection efforts over the next few years. Software technologies allow bots to seamlessly steal and enter consumer data automatically, without any human input required.
Luckily, the Wall Street Journal has proposed several precautionary measures to protect yourself from being victim to these kinds of frauds. You should start by changing your passwords every few weeks to ensure that no one can steal your identity easily. Remember to log off sites, especially when using public computers. When accessing payment of banking sites, be sure to check for security certificates to ensure it is a legitimate site. Monitor your bank account and credit card purchases to make sure all payments were authorized by you. Buy a shredder to shred documents containing personal information. Even junk mail can often hold personal information that can eventually get to a fraudster. Finally, you can choose to buy a fraud protection service, which will work to protect your money and identity round the clock. These services are usually subscription based and charge a monthly or yearly fee.
Everyone from your 10-year old nephew to your 98-year old grandma has a Facebook account. In fact, Facebook has approximately 1.79 billion active users! It would seem unlikely that anyone or anything can rival or challenge the success of this huge tech giant. But, even a company such as Facebook needs to be ever-changing and ever-adapting to newer circumstances. Facebook’s profits aren’t what they used to be due to less people clicking on their advertisements.
Rivals such as LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat, have taken away from Facebook’s stardom in recent years, especially among younger individuals belonging to the Xer and Nexter generations. Many pre-teens, teens, and young adults don’t visit Facebook as often as they used to, as they feel alienated by the presence of their parents, aunts, uncles, and grandparents on the site!
According to the Financial Times’ report “Facebook at Work,” Facebook is seeking to gain foothold on the workplace, aiming to serve as a site for professional networking, not just personal relationships. Facebook is developing a new product that that will allow users to chat with colleagues and collaborate on projects using virtual work spaces. Its aim is to combine professional networking on sites such as LinkedIn, the largest professional social networking service, with Facebook, which is primarily used to connect with family and friends.
This is Facebook’s latest feat since it bought WhatsApp, a cloud-based messaging service, for $19 billion in 2014. Facebook is a company that values innovation in technology, and is always one step ahead of its competitors, in their ability to capture as much of the market as possible.
